However, if I were to recommend a simple, hassle-free option, the combined E102 + E44 route is the best choice for most travelers; it stays entirely within the UAE and avoids the risk of accidentally crossing into Omani territory. To take this route:

From within Dubai (e.g., Sheikh Zayed Road or central areas), get onto the E611 (Emirates Road) or E66 (Dubai–Al Ain Road).

Head towards Al Madam / Al Hibab.

As you approach the Al Madam area, keep an eye out for signs pointing to Sharjah / Kalba (E102).

At this point, instead of continuing on the E44, switch to the E102 (Sharjah–Kalba Road) to avoid accidentally entering the Omani border zone.

Continue straight along the E102 until you reach the Shawka area.

Here, signs for Hatta will guide you to the final section of the E44, which leads directly into the town of Hatta.

If, for any reason, there is roadwork or a closure on the main route, you can use the E88 (Al Dhaid Road); this route is slightly longer, but it takes you steadily through the foothills to your destination.

Does the Route Cross Oman?

No, if you follow our recommended route, you do not need to cross the Oman border. However, this question arises because, in certain sections of the E44 (Dubai–Hatta Road), the route passes close to the border; a wrong turn could lead you into border zones (such as the Mahdah area). Fortunately, alternative routes like the E102 (Sharjah–Kalba Road) have been designed to keep the entire journey within UAE territory, eliminating the need for an Oman visa.

Warning: Under certain conditions, Google Maps or Waze might suggest a shorter route via the E44. If you proceed without paying close attention, you risk reaching the border. Always check the suggested route on your navigation app before setting off.

How Much Does the Trip Cost?

The cost of a trip from Dubai to Hatta includes fuel, Salik (toll) charges, and car rental fees. You must also account for the return trip from Hatta to Dubai. Let’s break down each of these costs:

1. Fuel Cost (The primary expense)

The round-trip distance is typically between 260 and 300 kilometers. Fuel costs vary depending on the vehicle type:

Vehicle Type

Average Fuel Consumption

Estimated Round-trip Fuel Cost

Economy (Toyota Corolla / Hyundai Elantra)

5.5–6.5 L/100km

45–65 AED

Sedan (Toyota Camry / Kia K5)

6.5–7.5 L/100km

55–80 AED

SUV (Mitsubishi Outlander / RAV4)

8–11 L/100km

75–110 AED

Note that in the UAE, fuel prices are set by the UAE Fuel Price Committee, so fuel cost in Dubai is same as in Hatta.

2. Salik (Toll Charges)

Generally, the direct route to Hatta involves almost no Salik tolls; however, if you start from urban areas like Marina or Sheikh Zayed Road:

Scenario

Salik Cost

Downtown → E44 route

0–4 AED

Marina → E311 route

4–12 AED

Mixed urban routes

8–16 AED

Choosing a route that starts via the E611 or E44 highways can reduce Salik costs to almost zero.

3. Car Rental Cost (If renting a vehicle)

If you are traveling in a rental car, this is the main expense of the trip. Parking & Activities in Hatta

Fortunately, most of Hatta’s main attractions, such as Hatta Dam and Heritage Village, have free or very cheap parking. In general, if you rent an economy car like a Toyota Corolla, the total cost comes to around 125 to 153 dirhams; for sedans like the Camry, it is about 200 to 237 dirhams; and for an SUV like the Mitsubishi Outlander, it is approximately 198 to 245 dirhams.

      YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP

      Dubai to Hatta.
Make the journey yours.

Planning a trip to Hatta? First, the entire route and all the sightseeing attractions are paved, so you can drive there in any vehicle. Second, even if you were to rent an off-road vehicle, rental company policies and insurance terms do not permit taking rental cars off-road. Therefore, renting an SUV specifically for off-roading makes no sense.

However, if you need more space for passengers or cargo, an SUV rental in Dubai like the 7-seater Mitsubishi Outlander or the Hyundai Palisade could be a good option. Both vehicles also excel in terms of comfort and safety features.

Best Stops and One-Day Itinerary

To make the most of your day, follow the itinerary we’ve planned for you; just be sure to set off from Dubai by 7:30 AM so you arrive before the heat sets in and the crowds gather.

Early Morning: Start the day at Hatta Dam

Our first recommended stop is Hatta Dam; the turquoise waters, framed by rugged rocky mountains, offer a stunning view. Just keep in mind that activities at Wadi Hub are generally seasonal, running from October to May; during the summer, the center closes or operates on a very limited basis due to the heat.

Evening: Relaxation and a Meal

Before heading back to Dubai, enjoy a hearty meal at one of Hatta’s local cafes or restaurants, or have a quick picnic at Hatta Public Park. If you also plan to return to Dubai on the same day, we recommend leaving before 8:30.

Parking, Fuel and Facilities

You don’t need to worry too much about fuel; there are large ENOC and ADNOC stations along the E102 highway that feature both restrooms and supermarkets. Within the city itself, there are also several well-equipped gas stations with shops and clean restrooms. However, if you are driving an electric vehicle, make sure to fully charge it in Dubai; you can also find charging stations at some fuel stops while taking a break in Hatta.

Rental-Car Checklist

Before finalizing your car rental, check the following points with the rental company:

Mileage Allowance: Ensure the contract’s daily mileage limit covers your planned trip to avoid extra charges.

Condition of A/C and Tires: Mountain roads require tires in good condition with proper air pressure. Also, the air conditioner is essential in the UAE!

Required Documents: Carry your original International Driving Permit, national driver’s license, passport, and visa.

Insurance Coverage: Clarify whether or not you have Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) coverage.

Fuel Policy: Most companies provide the car with a specific fuel level and expect it returned with the same amount (Full-to-Full).

Roadside Assistance Number: Save the rental company’s 24-hour support number on your phone so you can get quick help in case of a flat tire or mechanical issue.

In addition to the above, be sure to familiarize yourself with UAE speed limits to avoid fines amounting to hundreds of dirhams.

Seasonal and Weather Planning

Due to its elevation, the weather in Hatta is usually a few degrees cooler than in Dubai; however, it can still be extremely hot and grueling between June and September. If you visit during this period, it is best to limit outdoor activities to the early morning or evening. Conversely, winter (November to March) is the best time to visit, as the weather is cool and pleasant, and most activities are available.

Another important point is that, given its location amidst the mountains, Hatta is prone to flash floods in the wadis during rainy days. If rain is forecast, check official warnings before setting out and avoid entering the wadi beds.

Other Ways to Reach Hatta

Renting a car isn’t the only option. The RTA express bus (Route H02) travels from Dubai Mall to Hatta, taking about 90 minutes. It is a great choice for a budget-friendly trip or for those who prefer not to drive, though it is best to check the schedule beforehand due to the limited frequency of services.

Another option is taxis or group tours, which don’t have the hassle of routes or borders and the driver handles everything, but they are usually more expensive. Overall, renting a car strikes the best balance between flexibility, time management, and cost-efficiency.

Ready for a road trip?

Traveling from Dubai to Hatta is one of the best road trips from Dubai that you can experience.
